DAVIS CUP VICTORY!
What a great Davis Cup victory Australia had in July to now qualify for the semi - final stage of this hugely traditional competition of Australian tennis. With the men’s game in particular really starting to perform at the International level again, it is a huge result to be back in the semi-final stage. I also feel that with our best team hopefully available to pick from to compete against the Brits and Andy Murray, that it is a genuine opportunity for us to reach the final in 2015.
To fight back from 0 – 2 to win the tie is great credit to all involved but Wally Masur and his team deserve a lot of kudos in playing Sam Groth along with Lleyton Hewitt on the final day. With both Kygrios and Kokkinakis going down on day 1 it required some courageous decisions to be made and these were taken. It was also pleasing to see our ‘local’ boy Sam Groth play a major role in the win and backing up from what is developing into a very successful year for him. Sam has been on our courts at BTC so it is very satisfying to see him come through!
Added to the drama of the tie was the controversy of Bernard Tomic, our highest ranked player, and to a lesser degree of Nick Kygrios in the lead up. Hence to come through was an even better performance by the team. I am sure these issues will be resolved by the players concerned and have faith in Tennis Australia to be in a strong position later in the year.
